BC Paper Petitions – The Process

STEP 1: Create a Petition

Follow the rules outlined by the BC Government in their Petitions: Guidelines and Rules, or read our summary of these guidelines and rules on our website under Paper Petitions in the Overview and BC Rules pages.

Shortcut: Use our Petition for a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income demonstration project in BC.

STEP 2:  Collect enough signatures to demonstrate public support

The minimum number of signatures required is just one. One person can ask an MLA to submit their signed Petition to the Legislative Assembly. However, the more signatures you collect the more you demonstrate broad public support for your Petition.

To sign a petition you must be a resident of BC and provide your name and address. There is no minimum age requirement. Children and youth can sign a petition too!

STEP 3: Submit your Petition to any Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA)

Write to the MLA of your choice and ask them to present your Petition in the Legislative Assembly. You are not required to submit it to the MLA in your riding.  Only give your Petition (which must be the original), if the MLA agrees to present it in the BC Legislative Assembly on your behalf.

Remind the MLA that a fundamental principle of parliamentary democracy is the right of the public to have access to parliament by way of Petition, and that by accepting to present your Petition does not mean they endorse the views or request for action.  It is the responsibility of the MLA to review your petition and make sure that it is clear, concise, factual and respectful and follows all the rules of BC petitions (as found in Standing Order 73).

STEP 4: The MLA presents your Petition in the BC Legislative Assembly

A Petition, on being presented and meeting the requirements of Standing Order 73, is deemed to have been received, and copies are made available to any MLA upon request. Presentation of the petition is recorded in Votes and Proceedings.
